No click from your torque wrench when it reaches the set torque? A pitfall 90% of mechanics have fallen into!

When it comes to precision machine tool assembly or optical module assembly, the torque wrench is your bottom line.

Lately, many of my workshop mates have been asking me the same hot question:
You set the torque correctly, lock the locking ring, and crank it all the way until it feels tight in your hand – but there's no warning click, no trip‑out.

Many people think:
"As long as it's tightened, it doesn't matter whether it clicks or not."

That is the single biggest safety hazard in the workshop!

No click, no trip = torque failure, precision out of control.
In mild cases, you get loose fittings, position drift, and abnormal noise.
In severe cases, you end up with stripped threads, bent lead screws, and a scrapped machine – total loss of accuracy.

Today, I'm going to share my hands‑on shop‑floor experience to teach you how to quickly troubleshoot a torque wrench that won't click – without even taking it apart.

I. Four troubleshooting steps that beginners most often overlook

1. Never set the torque below the wrench's minimum range

Every mechanical torque wrench has a minimum triggering torque.

For example: if your wrench has a range of 10–100 N·m,
and you set it to 8 N·m or 5 N·m – it will never click and never trip.

Why? Because the internal travel mechanism isn't long enough for the spring‑loaded balls to release. This is normal behavior – the wrench isn't broken.


2. The rear locking ring must be fully locked

Many apprentices adjust the torque but leave the locking ring half‑engaged or loose.

When the ring is loose, the threaded adjustment sleeve floats. Under load, it simply slips instead of transferring force properly, so the trip‑out mechanism never engages.


3. The operating motion must be smooth and slow

Torque wrenches hate sudden force and impact.

If you jerk it or slam it hard:

  • You can overshoot the trip point instantly

  • The internal mechanism doesn't have time to rebound

  • You think you've reached the set torque, but in reality it's way off

Correct technique: apply steady, even pressure – tighten slowly and smoothly, and stop immediately the moment you hear the click.


4. Never use a torque wrench to loosen screws! (This is what kills 90% of wrenches)

A torque wrench is for tightening only – never for loosening!

The instant impact force from breaking a screw loose will directly damage:

  • The internal cam groove

  • The pressure balls

  • The energy-storage spring

Once damaged, the symptoms are: no click, no trip, weak output, excessive free play.


II. Still no click after all these checks? That means internal failure.

If you've ruled out all the operational issues above and still get no click, you're looking at one of three hardware problems:

1. Spring fatigue and weakening (the most common culprit)

Storing the wrench with high torque settings for long periods, or leaving it under constant compression, reduces spring force – it can no longer push the mechanism far enough to trip.

2. Internal oil sludge or metal chips jamming the works

Shop dust, old grease, and debris can gum up the balls, preventing them from moving freely and snapping back to trip.

3. Internal parts worn or dislocated

Dropping the wrench, banging it, or using it beyond its rated capacity can damage or displace internal components – once that happens, the mechanism is essentially scrap.

III. Repair or replace? Here's the honest truth.

1. Ordinary domestic (Chinese-made) budget torque wrenches
The repair + calibration cost is roughly the same as buying a new one.
Just replace it – that's the most cost‑effective move.

2. Brand‑name, high‑precision imported torque wrenches
These are worth servicing:
– Disassemble and clean
– Replace the spring
– Re‑calibrate
They can be restored to factory‑level accuracy.


IV. The old master's ultimate maintenance rhyme (rules to live by)

After use, reset to zero.
Never use it to loosen.
Apply torque smoothly and slowly.
No dropping, no knocking.

A good torque wrench, properly maintained, will serve you well for years.
Abuse it, and you'll scrap one in three months.
